With the opening of the monumental TRANSFORMATOR hall at DARK MATTER Berlin, KINETIC LIGHTS presents the return of SKALAR: Reflections on Light & Sound — the internationally acclaimed audiovisual installation by Christopher Bauder and Kangding Ray. Combining floating motorized mirrors, precisely choreographed light, and an immersive multidimensional sound system, SKALAR transforms the vast industrial architecture into a living sculpture of motion, emotion, and perception.
The installation creates luminous spatial drawings that continuously emerge and dissolve in synchronization with Kangding Ray’s richly textured electronic compositions. Rooted in Robert Plutchik’s theory of the eight primary human emotions, SKALAR explores how light and sound shape our psychological experience, shifting between tension and stillness, abstraction and intimacy. Through the interplay of kinetic motion, mirrored reflections, and cinematic sound design, light itself becomes an almost tangible material.
Alongside the contemplative exhibition format, SKALAR Live and the new SONIC SESSIONS series bring the installation into dialogue with electronic music culture. International artists including Âme, Max Cooper, Modeselektor, KiNK, and Jennifer Cardini perform within the synchronized light environment, dissolving the boundaries between concert, installation, club experience, and immersive art.
